Description
From Marrakech you can join desert safari tours that take you out into the Sahara (e.g. Merzouga or Zagora), often via the Atlas Mountains. These tours typically include travel by 4×4 or minivan, stops at scenic mountain passes, villages and kasbahs, camel rides in the dunes, nights in desert camps under the stars, and sometimes also quad biking or sand boarding. You’ll see dramatic landscapes: dunes, oases, wide open skies, and often sunrise/sunset over the sand — highlights that make the long journey worthwhile.
You’ll need to allow 2 to 5 days for a safari for a more immersive experience. A popular option is a 3‑day tour: leave Marrakech, reach the desert (Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga), stay one or more nights in camps, then return. Shorter options exist (one night or overnight) but these are more rush‑through and travel times are long. Also factor in travel time, rest breaks, and maybe acclimatizing to the heat or altitude if you are crossing mountains.
Prices vary depending on duration, comfort, group size, what’s included (meals, lodging, private vs shared transport), and level of luxury of the desert camp. For example, a 3‑day desert safari might cost a few hundred USD or equivalent in Moroccan Dirhams. Before booking you should check what’s included: transport from/to Marrakech, whether camel ride & camp are included, how remote the camp is, what meals are provided, how many people per vehicle/tent etc. Bring warm clothes for nights, sun protection for the day, water, good walking shoes, and prepare for early mornings. It’s also wise to book in advance during high season (spring, autumn) to secure your spot and better prices.
