Description
Castillo Mundo King is an eccentric, surreal castle-museum perched atop a hill in Sosúa. Built by German artist Rolf Schulz starting in 1990, the castle is filled with hundreds of unusual artworks—murals, sculptures, carvings in stone and wood—many of them created by Haitian and Dominican artists. The themes are often unconventional: alien motifs, extra-terrestrial messages, distorted figures, political and mythological symbols. The building itself has five floors with winding staircases, hidden rooms, and odd architectural features. The top floor offers dramatic views overlooking the Bay of Puerto Plata.
It’s generally open daily from about 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, though hours may vary slightly. Admission is modest—around 300 Dominican Pesos (approximately US$6) per person. Visitors may also offer a small tip for a guide who can explain the art and backstory more deeply. Be prepared for a raw and artistic experience—parts of the castle lack modern infrastructure like electricity or running water, and some sections may feel a bit rugged or worn.
To make the most of your visit, bring a flashlight for exploring darker areas, wear comfortable shoes suitable for climbing stairs and uneven floors, and keep expectations open—it’s not a polished museum but more of a living, chaotic art piece. Visiting earlier in the day is recommended to avoid the midday heat and crowds. If you stay until sunset, the views from the upper levels are especially stunning.
