Fortaleza Ozama is located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, right by the mouth of the Ozama River. It’s one of the oldest colonial military structures in the Americas, built by the Spanish between 1502‑1507 to defend the city from pirates and enemy colonial powers. Over the centuries it was expanded and modified. The fortress includes defensive features such as thick coral stone walls, battlements, the “Tower of Homage” (Torre del Homenaje) used for lookouts, and a gate known as Puerta Carlos III. At various times in history it also served as a prison—you can explore some of its dungeons and old guard posts, and there’s a statue of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo on site, who was a notable figure tied to its history.

It is open for public visits daily (hours usually about 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM), though closing times may be earlier on Sundays. Admission is relatively inexpensive, about 70 Dominican Pesos for adults, and there are optional guided tours that cost a bit more. The Tower of Homage offers panoramic views over the river and old city, and climbing it is one of the highlights. Inside the fortress you'll also see El Polvorín (the old powder house), and the ruins of early construction works.

To get there, walk to Calle Las Damas in the Colonial Zone. The fortress is a major landmark so signs and locals will point you toward it. Wear comfortable shoes because ground is uneven, with stone steps and cobbles. Early morning is a good time to visit to avoid crowds and midday heat. Photography is allowed at most parts, though respect the site’s historic nature—some parts are quiet or solemn. Bringing water is wise, especially on hot days.
