Description
Paphos Castle, located at the western end of the town's harbour in Cyprus, is a historic fortress with a rich and varied past. Originally constructed by the Byzantines to protect the harbour, the castle underwent multiple reconstructions over the centuries. In the 13th century, the Lusignans rebuilt it, but the Venetians dismantled it in the 16th century. The Ottomans reconstructed the castle in 1592, incorporating elements from the earlier Frankish and Venetian structures. Today, the castle stands as a testament to the island's diverse cultural influences and serves as a prominent landmark in Paphos.
The castle's architecture features a large square tower with an enclosed courtyard. The ground floor comprises a central hall and smaller rooms, which were used as prison cells during Ottoman rule. The roof boasts 12 battlements, which originally housed cannons; however, these were removed in 1878 when the British took control of the island. Following their occupation, the British utilized the castle as a salt store until 1935, when it was declared an ancient monument under the Antiquities Law.
Paphos Castle is open to visitors year-round, with operating hours varying by season. From April 16 to September 15, it operates from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and from September 16 to April 15, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The entrance fee is approximately €2.50, with discounts available for organized groups. Visitors can explore the castle's historical rooms, enjoy panoramic views of the harbour from the rooftop, and learn about its rich history through various exhibits.
