Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens, located in Hilo, Hawaii, is a unique facility that combines a zoo with a botanical garden, offering visitors a chance to experience tropical wildlife and lush plant life in a natural rainforest setting. Established in 1978, it is the only naturally occurring tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. The zoo is home to over 80 species and nearly 300 animals, including native Hawaiian species like the Nene (Hawaiian goose) and the endangered Hawaiian hawk (ʻio), as well as exotic animals such as Bengal tigers, lemurs, and giant anteaters. The botanical gardens feature a diverse collection of orchids, bamboos, palms, and a water garden, providing a serene environment for both wildlife and visitors.
The zoo is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, except on Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and the first Thursday of each month when it is closed for maintenance. Admission fees, effective from August 1, 2025, are as follows:
