Description
Australia Zoo, located in Beerwah on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, is about an hour’s drive north of Brisbane. Founded by the late Steve Irwin and still run by his family, the zoo covers 110 acres and is world-famous for its focus on wildlife conservation and education. Visitors can see a wide variety of animals, including native Australian species like koalas, kangaroos, and wombats, alongside exotic animals such as tigers, rhinos, and crocodiles. The zoo features daily wildlife shows, interactive animal encounters, and access to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, where guests can get a behind-the-scenes look at veterinary care.
The zoo is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM, and is closed only on Christmas Day. Admission prices are approximately $75 for adults, $50 for children aged 3–14, with discounts for concessions and free entry for kids under 3. Tickets include entry to all shows and exhibits, a shuttle bus tour, and optional access to the Wildlife Hospital for a small additional fee. Visitors can get there by car via the Bruce Highway or take public transport to Beerwah Station, where a shuttle bus runs to the zoo. Guided tours from Brisbane are also available for convenience.
Most visitors spend about 4 to 6 hours exploring the zoo, which has extensive walking paths through naturalistic enclosures and interactive zones. It’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes and sun protection, especially during warmer months. The zoo also offers animal adoption programs for those who want to support conservation efforts more directly, providing updates and exclusive experiences related to their chosen animals. Australia Zoo combines entertainment, education, and conservation, making it a memorable and meaningful destination for families and wildlife lovers alike.
