Description
Tierpark Lange Erlen is a free wildlife and nature park located in the Lange Erlen forest area of Basel, Switzerland, at Erlenparkweg 110. Established in 1871, it spans about 20 hectares and is set within a peaceful riverside landscape along the Wiese River. The park focuses on native and European animals in naturalistic enclosures, making it a relaxing and educational destination for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a quiet escape within the city.
Visitors can see a variety of animals including red and fallow deer, wild boar, lynx, foxes, wildcats, and a range of water birds such as ducks, swans, herons, and storks. There are also domestic animals like goats, sheep, rabbits, ponies, and guinea pigs, as well as an aviary and small petting areas. Many animals roam freely in designated spaces, and the enclosures are well integrated into the forest setting. The park also includes a playground, picnic areas, and shaded walking trails, making it ideal for families with young children.
You should plan for about 2 to 4 hours depending on your pace and interest level. Entry is free and the park is open daily—generally from 08:00 to 18:00 in summer (March to October) and until 17:00 in winter (November to February). No booking is needed. On Sundays, pony rides are available for a small fee, and a snack kiosk offers drinks, ice creams, and light food. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as well as weather-appropriate clothing. Public transport options to the park are excellent, and dogs are welcome if kept on a leash.
