Description
Matryoshka is a stylish two‑storey restaurant located at Kutuzovsky Avenue 2/1, building 6, right on the Moskva River embankment. It enjoys a scenic setting with large panoramic windows overlooking the river and nearby landmarks. The interior channels a Belle Époque / late 19th–early 20th‑century feel mixed with industrial touches: antique fixtures (like a pharmacy‑bar from Paris), aged tiles, custom cast‑iron stairs, an open kitchen, vintage lighting, wood, and decor elements that evoke an elegant but warm nostalgia.
The cuisine at Matryoshka is Russian, but done with creativity. The chef Vlad Piskunov draws from regional produce across Russia—ingredients from places like Yakutia, Kamchatka, the Volga, or the Caucasus. Dishes blend traditional recipes with modern techniques. You might find items such as julienne with Kamchatka crab, pelmeni with pike, okroshka with quail, Pacific sardine under a “fur coat”, or salmons, cloudberries, wild honey and foraged mushrooms. The bar also features inventive cocktails using local flavours and a wine list with both Russian and Old‑World vineyards.
Matryoshka operates daily from about 9:00 AM through to around 11:00 PM. Breakfast is served earlier in the day (on weekdays and weekends with slightly different times) and the main menu starts from noon. Dress code is smart casual; not overly formal, but nice enough for special occasions. It’s recommended to reserve ahead, especially for good seats by the river or on the veranda during warmer weather. Prices are higher than average, but many guests feel the ambiance, service, food quality, and river‑view justify it.
