Description
Smuggler’s Cove is a renowned tiki bar located at 650 Gough Street in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley neighbourhood. Established in 2009 by Martin and Rebecca Cate, the bar has gained international acclaim for its extensive rum collection and immersive atmosphere. The interior features three levels decorated with nautical and Polynesian-inspired décor, including dark wood panelling, ropes, an indoor waterfall, and a full-sized anchor, creating a vibe reminiscent of a pirate ship.
The bar boasts the largest rum selection in the United States, with over 1,300 varieties as of 2025. Its menu offers a curated selection of more than 80 cocktails, ranging from historic colonial tavern drinks to contemporary rum creations. Signature drinks include the famous “Smuggler’s Rum Barrel,” a punch made with 15 different rums and 20 different juices. For rum enthusiasts, Smuggler’s Cove also offers the Rumbustion Society, a rum club with three levels of membership: Disciple of the Cove, Guardian of the Cove, and Master of the Cove.
Smuggler’s Cove is strictly 21 and over, requiring valid ID for entry. Due to its popularity, the bar often has a line, especially on weekends, and uses a doorman to manage capacity. It’s open daily from 5:00 PM to 1:15 AM, making it a favourite destination for locals and tourists looking for a unique and immersive cocktail experience in San Francisco.
